The Ancient Art of Massage is one of the oldest therapies in the world, and to discover its precise origins is almost impossible. There is evidence that every culture has used massage in some form or other, and every language , ancient or modern , has a word for it. Ancient Chinese medical texts, dating back 5,000 years, advocate stroking the body to "protect against colds, keep the organs supple and prevent minor ailments". Ayurvedic scripts from around 4,000 years ago also recommend rubbing the body to treat and prevent disease. Since then massage has been inextricably linked to Indian culture. In ancient Egypt , carvings dating back more than 4,000 years show Pharaoh Ptah-Hotep receiving a leg massage from a male servant, while centuries later, Queen Cleopatra is recorded as enjoying a foot massage during dinner parties . There are some that believe that massage was used to heal thousands of years back into the legends of pre-history. Today this holistic approach is now widely used along mainstream medicine to compliment conventional treatments.
